Mimi has been teaching Iyengar Yoga since 2011, after having completed the Teacher Training in NY, led by James Murphy. She has traveled to Pune, India three times (the first time, in 2012, when Mr. Iyengar was still occasionally teaching; an unforgettable experience) and plans on going there regularly in the future, to keep getting inspired by the Iyengar family. In addition to her regular classes at the Iyengar Institute and other studios, she teaches inmates at the Rikers Island jail and also at a rehab center in Red Hook. These students teach her a lot about the true meaning of yoga. To Mimi, the most important result of a good yoga practice is to find deep connections between body, mind and breath. It’s the experience of these connections that makes one feel more whole as a human being and more connected to other human beings. Mimi grew up in The Netherlands, where she studied Philosophy and Musicology at the University of Amsterdam and Piano at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. She still plays and teaches piano, comprehending more and more the famous words of violinist Yehudi Menuhin, “B.K.S. Iyengar was my best violin teacher!”
